For many small businesses, the end of the year tends to creep up with little warning. If you find yourself staring the end of the year in the face like the proverbial deer in the headlights, we’ve got some tips for you to help finish out the year from a position of strength instead of bewilderment – and it’s not just about business stuff, either. Clearing your head is just as important as clearing your desk so, get ready to start the new year with a fresh attitude!
1. Out with the old, in with the … unclutteredness!
The end of the year is a great time to de-clutter your office space. It’s an inspirational, even Zen, method of trimming the fat and you just may find your daily tasks to be that much more enjoyable when you’re not looking at big piles of “things to do tomorrow”. Are there bits of old technology hanging about? Outdated business cards? Files that can be stored elsewhere? Piles of documents to be shredded? Devote a day to clearing out the detritus and you just may find yourself with tons of ideas about what to do next.
2. Moving on: leave old business behind
Is there an issue with a colleague or employee that has been needing to be discussed? You certainly don’t want to carry a resentment into the new year if you can help it. Schedule important conversations and then have them. No matter how difficult they might be, don’t put them off. Do it now, clear the air, and things will be so much better – both in your realm and within the realm of your working relationship with this individual.
3. Clear up any confusion
If you are working for a company or performing a task that you have never quite been sure about, the end of the year is the perfect time to come clean. Ask for a bit of insight or an extra set of eyes on the assignment to see if you are looking at it in the right way or missing a step in the process. You certainly don’t want to come back to work after the holidays and be faced with the same old frustration. Starting fresh from a place of confidence will allow you to dive right in with no hesitation and conquer like the rockstar you are!
4. Focus on progress and let the end result be its own reward
So many of us focus solely on a specific end result, such as building a client list to a certain level or boosting sales to a set quota. However, being too focused on these goals may blind us to the wins we’ve had along the way. Sometimes, the ground we gain in the journey towards these goals gets far too little credence. The impact our efforts make is sometimes its own reward, setting us up for success and advancement in the future.
