One of the best parts of our community at Business Workspaces is getting to know our members. We enjoy being able to learn more about what everyone does not just on a professional level, but on a personal one as well. We recently had the chance to learn more about Scott Draper and his business and we hope you enjoy getting to learn more about Scott as well – Take a look!
Tell us about your company and what you do?
I provide financial planning services, help clients set goals, assist with setting up a risk-return profile, and maintain the discipline to reach the goals. It can be a lifelong process, but it is worth it as I have long term clients.
How did you get started in your industry?
I actually started in accounting and did individual accounting for a few years and then broadened my skill set to become a financial planner.
What is something about your business that most people do not know?
I think in the financial services world, most people think it is only about the investments and about making money from the right investments, but I actually believe it’s more about having a good financial plan. Obviously, the investments matter, that is part of it, but having a realistic plan will bring you wealth and success.
What advice do you have for others interested in becoming a financial planner?
First, make sure it’s something you really want to do and have a passion for. I was telling my son this morning; find something you love doing and get paid for it. Also, be patient because it is the type of career that, although is very rewarding, might take a while to get where you want to be. It might take five to ten years to build a solid client base.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I want to grow my business, but I’m not in it to serve an enormous client base. I want to be available and have great service for the clients that I do have. I see my business bigger than it is now but not significantly different.
I would like to bring on an associate advisor as well. My passion lays in serving my smaller client base rather than having a huge client base.
Tell me about yourself?
My wife and I have four children, and so our family life is very busy. My oldest daughter is out of the house and we have three boys at home. Lately, we like hiking, being outdoors, riding bikes and we love to travel.
Why did you choose Business Workspaces and how has working here helped your business?
I chose to be here to have a professional background for client meetings and that’s what I do here. A lot of the work I do or need to get done can be done remotely but I need to have a professional environment to focus on work and utilize the large screens in the conference rooms.
How long have you been a member of Business Workspaces?
Since I started my business in September 2014. As long as I can get good meeting space to meet with my clients, I am happy. Should I choose to hire someone in the future, I would see what upgrade is available.
What makes you feel energized about your business?
The thing that is exciting obviously is the people and feeling like you can make a difference in their life. Sitting down with people and doing the work and implementing a plan is impacting their life and that is huge for me.
Do you have a daily habit that helps you be more successful?
I try to maintain a schedule and exercise. My wife and I found that the most important thing is to start regularity- get up at a regular time and exercise daily and keep a routine.
Do you have a book that you often recommend or gift to people? Why?
I haven’t been reading regularly, but there is a book that was given out at a conference called, “Ultimate Gift” that has to do with money transferred between generations and the story is about giving principles in addition to money. You can pass on work ethic, you can pass on services, and how passing on the knowledge of wealth can be good and help future generations. Some people love the book and some people don’t but I enjoyed it. If you understand the value of hard work, you will appreciate the story.
