Coworking is coming into its own – it even has its own day. Why August 9, you say? On that date in 2005, Brad Neuberg opened the first coworking space in America, in San Francisco, California.
However, the practice of coworking goes even further back to 1995 in Berlin, Germany, to a non-profit “hackerspace” called C-Base, dedicated to computer enthusiasts of all ilks. From there, coworking went through many iterations, and spaces started popping up with the overarching mission of connecting workers worldwide around a shared work ethic and independent spirit.
Today, there are almost 20,000 coworking spaces in the world, 6,200 of which are in the US. Though their popularity has grown over the past two decades, they became more important as the gig economy grew, providing freelancers with all the benefits of a corporate office without a long-term commitment or high price tag.
How Will You Celebrate World Coworking Day?
If you’re like us, you don’t need an excuse to celebrate. And while coworking might not merit a parade (but you do you, we’ll definitely be there!), there are plenty of ways to mark the day and make it special for your co-coworkers and the staff.
Here are a few ideas:
Have a Party
Whether it’s lunch, a massive cake, drinks, or a dance party, Coworking Day is a chance for your coworking community to step away from screens and toast what makes their workplace special. We’d wager your coworking center will have something going on, but if you think it’s better to get out of the office, reserve some tables at your local, order a bunch of finger foods, and ask people to drop by.
Share Coworking Wins
Encourage everybody to write a short anecdote about how coworking has given them a win in their work or personal life. Post everyone’s entries on a wall so the rest of the community can read them and get to know each other a little better.
Host a Workshop
Every coworker loves to learn. Solicit creative topic ideas and hire someone to come in and give a talk or conduct a workshop that everyone can enjoy. Whether it’s about computer skills, content creation, or something more fun like a cocktail-making course, it’s a way to come together around a shared interest.
Have a Contest
Trivia, games of skill, feats of strength, a raffle, a 50/50 draw, or a giveaway is a great way to engage. If you choose giveaways, make sure you get a few items and make it fun—like a poker hand or a series of clues to a mystery that must be solved.
