It’s not always easy or practical to go on a full-blown vacation, but we’re lucky enough to live in an area where there’s plenty to see and do right here in our own backyard. Good times are never far away when you live in El Dorado Hills and the greater Sacramento area.
Here are a few of our favorite staycation ideas to get you the rest and relaxation you need without breaking the bank or leaving home.
Get Outdoors
If you love fresh air and scenery, there’s nothing better than being outside. It’s the perfect time of year for hiking, camping, or even just a picnic in the park. Try Madrone Tree Hill, Sly Park, or the Fleming Trail System. If you love waterfalls, check out Glen Alpine Falls, Modjeska Falls, or take a short drive through the El Dorado National Forest toward Lake Tahoe to get in some serious waterfall action.
Discover New Wine and Food Destinations
One of the most incredible things about California is our culinary culture. Best of all, you don’t even have to leave town to discover new places to love. From pubs and cafés for casual lunch, coffee, and an afternoon microbrew to evenings of fine dining to late-night drinks and conversation, you’ll find plenty to choose from in town and just a short drive away. Challenge yourself to experience new cuisines. Make a list of places you’ve always wanted to try, and then make reservations. Give them your own ratings and reviews and see how they compare to what you read online. Treat it like an adventure, and you’ll bound to be blown away.
Napa and Sonoma aren’t the only players in the California wine scene! If you’re a wine lover, there are more than 70 wineries in El Dorado County—certainly more than you can visit in your average staycation—but plenty for you to explore and discover. Some have restaurants you can have lunch at, others invite you to picnic on their grounds, and most offer a surprising variety of wine styles for every palate and budget.
Visit a Theme Park
If you have kids, they’ll love nothing more than a visit to an amusement park. It’s just an hour and a half to Six Flags in Vallejo, where you’ll find rides galore, animal attractions, and plenty of fun for everyone. Funderland is perfect for kids under 12, with carousels, rides, and pint-sized fun galore. And, of course, there’s always the Sacramento Zoo, which is fun for the whole family.
Book an Airbnb, Hotel, or Spa Stay
If you’re looking to get out of your element without going too far, why not book a short stay at a local Airbnb or a spa day (or stay) at Arden Hills Resort? Other day spa options include Serenity Spa in Folsom or Geri’s Garden Spa in Fair Oaks.
