Business Workspaces is lucky enough to surround ourselves and our community with an amazing group of members! Each month we are excited to interview one of those great individuals so that everyone has a chance to learn more about those within our community. This month we were able to speak with Tarin Delavoye of My Modern Manners. Take a look below to find out more:
Tell us about your company and what you do?
I am the owner and instructor at My Modern Manners where I teach children ages 7-18 age-appropriate lessons on topics such as, how we show gratitude, effective communication, dining etiquette, the importance of making a great first impression and so much more!
How did you get started in your industry?
I have thought about starting a manners school for many years, but I always talked myself out of it. Finally, in July of 2020 I decided to pull the trigger and start getting the word out and it picked up… FAST. I am about to start my 5th session which is super exciting. I took many years of manners class as a young girl as well as attending cotillion in middle school. Polite etiquette has ALWAYS been a huge part of me, and I love teaching others the importance of making eye contact and sending a thank you card. I have 5 kids and I would be lying if I said all of them had the best manners, but I know they will appreciate my nagging when they are adults and remember how to set a table correctly.
What is something about your business that most people do not know?
That My Modern Manners exists! It is so new, and I have not yet gotten to market my business too much so please, SPREAD THE WORD.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I hope to see my business grow significantly. I would love to get to a point where I could possibly hire more coaches and teachers and offer services in a business setting for adults. I would love to teach in schools and offer more private sessions. Right now, I am studying cultural etiquette which would be fun to teach people who might be going on a vacation to other countries and want to learn traditional etiquette.
Tell me about yourself?
I grew up not too far from here in Sacramento, Ca. I moved to El Dorado Hills about 10 years ago with my husband and our 5 kids. We are a blended family that consists of 3 boys ages 19, 17, and 14 and 2 girls ages 22 and 14. We are a very busy bunch, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Other than work, what are you passionate about?
I am passionate about teaching my kids the importance of volunteering and having a big heart. Although with Covid, we cannot do much, and I try to remind them daily to do something nice for someone that day, even if it is just to give a small compliment. People are struggling so it is a passion of mine to help lift people up.
What types of activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?
I really enjoy weight training and I see a trainer 5 days a week. I find it helps with keeping me focused and keeps me accountable. I also love to be outside. I enjoy taking hikes and exploring our beautiful town of El Dorado Hills. I also love listening to podcasts!
Why did you choose Business Workspaces and how has working here helped your business?
A lovely lady reached out to me after I posted on a local neighborhood site that I was looking for a space to hold my classes. She told me about Business Workspaces and the moment I walked through the doors I was sold, and I didn’t look anywhere else. They are always so accommodating and the sweetest people. I use the Serrano Room which is always super pristine, and the large table makes it easy for me to teach my students, especially when I teach my dining lesson. They are just such a great facility.
What makes you feel energized about your business?
I am most motivated and energized by knowing I am bringing back something that is a lost art. Chivalry is not dead… it’s just dormant and I am determined to bring back a little old-fashioned etiquette! Times have changed and so has our patience. I am driven by knowing that when I walk into a lesson, I am about to teach kids the importance of being polite, mannerly, respectful, and confident.
Do you have a daily habit that helps you be more successful?
I would say a daily habit that helps me to be more successful would be that I make a list for myself EVERYDAY and every time I complete a task, I check it off. This keeps me motivated and ready for whatever is next. I have struggled with ADD my whole life, so keeping lists and paper calendars are an absolute must for me!!
Do you have a book that you often recommend or gift to people? Why?
Like I said earlier, I love Podcasts. I always recommend Earn Your Happy with Lori Harder. I love this one because she dives into topics like breaking out of your comfort zone and how to be the most powerful YOU. It’s stimulating and helps me to be more goal-oriented, which is not always easy. She is a realist which I admire as well.
