On any given day, in a coworking space, there are plenty of people to meet. Take the opportunity each day to introduce yourself to a few people. Yes, you’re there to work and no, you don’t want to earn a reputation as a distraction, but a quick introduction is a good idea. Making your presence known and learn about the skill sets of those around you, but keep it to a 2-minute limit.
Ask Open-Ended Questions
As you learn about your fellow coworkers’ businesses, ask open-ended, engaging questions. “What got you into the world of IT?” “What part of IT do you most like to focus on?” People enjoy talking about themselves and what they do. By asking open-ended questions you’re allow them to do just that. As they open up to you, show a genuine interest in what they are saying; you’re sure to learn all kinds of interesting things and create a long term connection.
Become a Resource
The opportunity might present itself for you to volunteer some information about yourself. If they engage with the information, let them know that you’re happy to answer questions and provide insight where ended. This is again a great way to open the lines of communication and to make your fellow co-workers feel like they can approach you. Who knows, your expertise may one day help you earn new business.
If appropriate or after continued conversation, be sure and follow-up either via phone or email. Tell them that you enjoyed meeting them and that you would be happy to be a resource for them. This is a nice and genuine way to express your interest in collaborating down the road.
